Where do I place my fingers when they are not typing?

Part of the key to ergonomic typing methods is to be natural and relaxed while maintaining good posture at all times.
It is not necessary to rest your fingers in any particular place when they are not being used.

Dr Leonard West, a prominent typing researcher in the 1970s and 80s, recommended:

“Do not discourage direct reaching for the keys;
do not insist on a return to the home keys after each stroke

(West, 1983, page 69)

While typing, allow the fingers that are not being used to either rest gently on the keyboard wherever they fall naturally, or in the air above the keyboard in whatever position feels natural and easy for you. The thumbs are held comfortably near the space bar.

How will I know where the keys are?

How does a pianist remember all the dozens of keys on a piano without looking?

It comes naturally with a little practice. The hands do not need to move much in order for the fingers to reach the various keys. After you learn the Key Finger Groups, you will soon notice that you are automatically hitting the right keys without having to look.

When not typing at all, you are free to place your hands in whatever position is comfortable for you.
